Doug brings over 25 years of financial services experience focused on helping multi-generational families, business owners and foundations manage their financial affairs. Having experienced and survived several volatile markets, Risk Mitigation plays a vital role in Doug’s approach. In addition to the various required financial industry licenses, Doug has earned the Certified Divorce Financial Analyst (CDFA) designation and developed a respected specialization in assisting individuals navigate the myriad of financial implications of divorce.

Throughout his career, Doug has assisted clients by developing, implementing, monitoring and modifying personalized strategic investment plans. Engagements have always started with listening and understanding what a client is seeking and only then creating a series of suitable solutions to address financial needs – in the priority dictated by the client.

Prior to founding Piedmont, Doug held positions with the Broker Dealer Divisions of Wells Fargo Advisors, Bank of America’s Private Bank and Morgan Stanley. During the course of his career, Doug has attended numerous Continuing Education programs including Executive Education programs at the Wharton School of Business at University of Pennsylvania. Doug is a 1985 graduate of Cornell University.

An active and dedicated community volunteer, Doug currently serves on the executive board of The First Tee, Greater Washington Chapter and chairs its Northern Virginia Committee. The First Tee is a highly-respected international youth development organization that introduces the game of golf, its strategies and its sportsmanship values to youngsters from all socio-economic backgrounds. Additionally, for over a decade, Doug directed the Chantilly Youth Association Lacrosse Program.

Married to his wife Mary for over 28 years with two children (Nick - Cleveland Institute of Art / University of Delaware and  Meaghan - Penn State University '19), Doug enjoys spending time on the golf course, tailgating at college football and lacrosse games, and “breaking bread” with friends in the kitchen, enjoying a “Mary Birnie Italian masterpiece” or some home-smoked BBQ.

James began his wealth management career with The Vanguard Group in Charlotte, North Carolina. He joined its High Net Worth / Flagship Group (clients with portfolios in excess of $1 million) and was eventually guiding over $1 billion of client assets controlled by several hundred households. James eventually led a team of advisors on the desk.

While at Vanguard, James focused on portfolio management, tax efficient investing and diligently managing client exposure to internal fund expenses by utilizing lower-cost ETF and fund strategies. At Piedmont, James looks forward to devoting a higher level of thoughtful time and intellect to client needs.

James graduated from the University of South Carolina, Darla Moore School of Business with a double major in Corporate and Investment Finance. As such, he is equally well- versed and enthusiastic about wealth management and all things SEC sports.

James is returning to his roots with his move back to Northern Virginia, having spent his childhood in McLean. In his spare time, he enjoys all forms of athletic activities and helping tend to his family’s winery in Loudoun County. James and his dogs are frequently found running through the vineyard.
